NAFTA

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect on January 1, 1994 after being negotiated behind closed doors to wreck havoc on communities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. NAFTA represented a significant application of the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanism through which multi-national corporations have sued governments for attempting to protect its constituents. It represented the outsourcing of thousands of jobs in the United States and the devastation of rural communities in Mexico. NAFTA is currently being re-negotiated by the Trump administration. We are calling on NAFTA to be completely replaced with a deal that truly benefits workers and the environment.

Trans-Pacific Partnership

Trade for People and Planet was a campaign that began as an iniative to stop the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). In order to stop the TPP we needed to act quickly and in solidarity with people in other countries. This massive trade agreement was, and remains, a high priority for transnational corporations, and they will keep trying to make it law.

The TPP is a corporate power grab that impacts every aspect of people’s lives. If passed, it would take away environmental and food safety protections, increase US development of fracked gas and tar sands for export, lower wages and worker protections around the world, increase human trafficking, end what we have left of internet freedom, inhibit access to lifesaving medicine by extending patent rights to big pharmaceutical companies, spur further financial deregulation, increase land grabs of indigenous territory, and more.

Trade-in-Services Agreement

TiSA is an agreement that was being negotiated by the Obama adminsitration with the European Union and 21 other nations to eliminate trade barriers in services that would threaten the regulation of climate and energy policy, financial services, healthcare, education, and access to water. It represents an effort to privatize these industries and is an imminent threat to public services. The negotiations have been dominated by the influence of corporate lobbyists and the results will remain like that unless we intervene!

Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership

TTIP is a secretive trade deal being negotiated between the European Union and the United States which analysts say would result in devastating consequences for the European Union’s regulatory capacities. TTIP largely seeks to export the US’s regulatory model to Europe, posing a serious health to the region’s health, safety, environmental, labor, consumer, civil and political rights, and other regulatory protections.
